Title: Representation learning in drug discovery

Abstract: In this talk Berton will describe two important applications of representation learning to drug discovery: using convolutional networks to featurize images of human cells, and using graph convolutions to featurize molecular structure. Berton will discuss the challenges of learning on biological data sets, and describe how we use representations to discover candidate treatments for disease.

Bio: Berton is VP of Data Science at Recursion, and an adjunct professor of mathematics at the University of Utah, where he teaches a course in deep learning. Berton earned a PhD in math from the University of Utah, and has spent the years since at various Utah-based start-ups applying machine learning to problems in business, healthcare, and drug discovery.
